Awesome People Hanging Out Together

Fey, Silverman, Poeler

The internet has it’s fair share of awesome Tumblrs (and awesome in general, really), but I think my personal favourite is Awesome People Hanging Out Together. It’s been a bit of a tradition of mine to use these as my desktop background to remind me about, you know, awesome people! Like this collection of my favourite funny ladies, Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poeler, goofing around with Annie Leibovitz. Don’t they look so young!

Awesome People Hanging Out Together

Or Mr Cumberbatch obviously saying something charming and British to other charming Brits, Hugh Laurie and Idriss Elba. (*swoon*)

Crosby and Astaire

And with me being a complete vintage movie tragic, this photo of Fred Astaire leaping about while Bing Crosby looks on, nonchalantly clicking his fingers makes me melt. Check out Fred’s matching socks, belt and cravat! More on Astaire as a style hero over on The Sartorialist.

What do you think? A Tumblr worthy of ‘favourite’ status? Which is your favourite ‘awesome people’ shot?

5 Ways to Make Any City Feel Like Home

5 Ways to Make Any City Feel Like Home

I live in cities- in fact, just 3 major cities house almost half of the Australian population, and I’ve lived in all 3 for varying amounts of time. Mostly when I move around, it’s for work, and only for perhaps 6 months at a time. This leaves me in a weird limbo where I’m not quite ‘living out of a suitcase’, but I’m also not relocating my entire life.

This can be tough when it comes to settling into your new city and new life, knowing that it’s only temporary (but also slightly too long to be ACTUALLY temporary). So today I’m sharing 5 things I do to help me feel a bit of ownership over my temporary homes. I worked these out while moving around for work, but they can also totally apply to shorter trips and travel for fun!

Tuesday Tune – Cold War Kids

Let me set the scene for you. It was January, 2011. In about a week, a huge flood would inundate Brisbane, the city I was then living in. I was at Sunset Sounds, a now defunct music festival.

As the first of the rain that brought the flood started to fall, I was being jostled about in the crowd at the mainstage. A familiar bass riff started, everyone surged forward, and Cold War Kids started playing ‘Hang Me Up To Dry’. It’s one of my favourite live music memories I have.

I’m a big fan of their first album, Robbers & Cowards, and their follow up releases have been solid, but different. They’ve just released a new single, and I’m loving the return to the sound of the era of that first release.

FOMO Saturday

Lazy Saturday

This weekend is pretty low key for me- I have a bunch of work to catch up on, and I’m trying to not feel too left out of Splendour in the Grass, Australia’s favourite multi day music festival, which is happening at the moment.

I’ve been doing my nails while listening to The Best Radio Station Of All Time, Triple J, streaming live sets, including a stunner from everyones favourite rapping alter ego, Childish Gambino* (Content warning- His songs are full of bad language and adult themes, so perhaps don’t listen if that’s not your thing.)

Other activities include french press coffee (Freshly ground! Yum!), and online sneaker shopping- My current pair are threatening to fall apart.

What do you wish you could be doing this weekend?

If music festivals are your thing, check out this post by Becky over on Helene in Between about the variety of festivals we’re spoiled with in Australia!

*(Side note: Yep, that’s Donald Glover from NBC series Community- Did you know he was also a staff writer for 30 Rock immediately after he’d graduated from NYU Tisch, where he studied Dramatic Writing? Super talented. And total babe.)

When it comes to accessories, my super-dooper top 3 favourites are:

  • Boots
  • Bags
  • Coats

If you did an itemised cost-breakdown of my entire wardrobe, I guarantee that the most money would have been spent of these 3 items. When I’m obsessing over something I didn’t buy, you can bet it’s a coat, bag or boots.

At the top of this list of obsessions, for many years now, are the Acne Pistol Boots. Not too high, but still chic, I feel like I would live in these. Rag & Bone do a similar style , but the matte leather on the Acnes have really sucked me in. It’s love (and probably only a matter of time until I cave and buy them).

Summer Dreaming

Despite it being winter in Australia, I’m currently staying towards the northern end of the country, where it generally stays quite warm all year around- Granted, not quite warm enough to allow for the outfits above, but not cold enough to need a jacket in the day time. (How lucky are we!?)

I’m dreaming of these height-of-summer outfits because in 3 weeks time I’m venturing even further north, to spend a week in Darwin for work. The temperature is generally around the 30 degrees celsius mark in winter, so I’m looking forward to some sun, swimming and a bit of a tan!  Maybe that tan will help me rock the white shorts with stripes combo!

Tuesday Tune- The Shins

Natalie Portman and Zach Braff in Garden State

You guys, Garden State (and more importantly, it’s soundtrack) came out 10 years ago! It’s hard to think about Zach Braff’s cult directorial debut without hearing the tunes in your head.

On screen, Portland band The Shins took pride of place in Natalie Portman’s headphones with “New Slang”, a delightful but melancholy track from 2001’s “Oh, Inverted World”. Add to this tracks by Coldplay, Simon and Garfunkel and THAT cover by Iron & Wine, there’s no surprise that the soundtrack is celebrated as one of the best around.

Fast forward to now; Braff has another movie, along with another killer soundtrack, and The Shins are front and centre- Which brings me to today’s Tuesday Tune!

Not content with simply picking a song that already existed, Braff asked James Mercer of The Shins to watch the movie, then write a song about it. Like a Bond song! What he came up with is “So Now What”. This track joins Bon Iver, Paul Simon and a duet by Coldplay and Cat Power on what looks to be another iconic soundtrack.

Have a listen below and let me know what you think!

Lust Object- Marshall Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker

Marshall Stamore Bluetooth Speaker

Do you ever feel lazy when it comes to your music consumption? While streaming services such as Spotify stop me from being lazy in my music choice, I am still guilty of listening through my tiny laptop speakers. Enter the Marshall Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker, which would make my Spotify tunes sound sweet, with the added bonus of making me feel like an awesome rockstar.

(Nerd Talk: The added-added bonus is that, while boasting Bluetooth connectivity, it also has optical input for things like your Apple TV, and an RCA input, for things like your record player! Awesome!)
